Doraville’s first public art installation arrives in English Oak Park

English Oak Park has a new resident to join its squirrels and birds: a massive Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur. But don’t worry, this new park denizen doesn’t bite. It’s a statue!

Doraville Art Inc. (DArt) facilitated the acquisition and installation of this new public artwork, paid for by donations from local residents.

DArt President Sarah Marks says, “Doraville Art is so pleased and excited to contribute the first piece of public art installed within Doraville city limits. This will be the first of many projects to reflect our community’s unique makeup and energy.

The T. Rex, who will be named through a public poll (at bit.ly/DoravilleDino), is nine feet tall, and made of steel. Local artist Shawn Vincelette painted the dinosaur with a colorful, geometric design.

“I know it’s just the beginning of the artistic renaissance that’s coming to Doraville.”

Doraville Mayor Joseph Geierman

The official dedication and naming of the Doraville dino will take place on June 4 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. during a barbecue at the park celebrating Doraville’s 150th anniversary.  English Oak Park is at 4074 English Oak Dr., Doraville, GA 30340.

Doraville Mayor Joseph Geierman says, “Art doesn’t just make cities more beautiful—it also sparks new ideas and builds community. I’m excited about this new installation not just because it is fun and whimsical—I’m also excited because I know it’s just the beginning of the artistic renaissance that’s coming to Doraville.”

Marks adds, “We are eternally grateful for the new language voted on by our city council that allowed this to happen, and to our donors who supported this project. We look forward to working closely with both council members and the community in the future to make our city as colorful as its soul has always been.”

Writers! “Shut Up & Write” on Thursdays

Doraville Shut Up & Write meets every Thursday at 8 pm at White Windmill Bakery & Cafe (하얀풍차), 5881 Buford Hwy NE.

Once we settle in there, we shut up and write (or otherwise work on any writing project) for 25 minutes solid. Then we take a short break to eat, chat, whatever. Then we work again, and take another break. And again, one more time. Then we can socialize, or go home, or whatever.

The point is to have some focused writing time every week, and to turn writing into a social experience that is more motivating for some of us.

You do not need to share any of what you write (unless you want to) — this is not a writers’ critique session. It’s just a time for us to get together, support each other, and get some work done, building a new habit of consistent writing.

See you there!

Inaugural DART Event September 13, 2019, 5-7:30pm Atlanta Cuban Club

Please join us for our inaugural event on September 13, 2019, 5-7:30 pm at the Atlanta Cuban Club, 5797 New Peachtree Rd, Doraville, GA 30340.
It is a free event for artists, musicians, performers, art supporters and patrons and those who are just plain curious about what arts our city can offer!

There will be free food and drinks, cash bar, live music, dance, drums, and visual art as well as interactive events that will help us mold our council in the shape of the community that it will serve in the future.

This is an exciting time in Doraville! There are so many changes and we want to be a part of the wonderfully diverse community with so much to contribute to an evolving, vibrant and modern art scene.

If you want to be involved in the event as an artist (display your work or perform a song or poem, etc) or if you want to help us set up/break down or be involved in a future event please email Doravilleart@gmail.com and let us know how you want to be involved.

We are excited to present this meetup which I hope will be the first of many exciting events to come.
